Environmental and climate issues
TotalEnergies’ ambition is to be a major player in the energy transition, committed to net zero by 2050 together with society, and to attain it, the Company Our affirms its inherent purpose to provide as many people as possible with energy that is more affordable, more reliable and more sustainable at the heart of its strategy, project and operations. More energy, fewer emissions: the teams at the CSTJF and the PERL are mobilized to be part of this global challenge.
Energy is as essential resource, which is vital to all aspects of life: for food, light, heating or air-conditioning, traveling around, healthcare, construction and trading. Historically, energy demand has risen according to the demography and the increase in quality of life. The world population will increase by a further two billion people by 2050, which will have a considerable impact on the achievement of the UNO Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), to improve the prosperity and social wellbeing while protecting the environment and biodiversity.
The energy system has to keep pace and transform, as energy is at the heart of the global climate challenge. Our societies are still 81% dependent on fossil energies and, according to the IPCC and the IEA, in 2021 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) generated by energy production and use represented over 60% of global emissions. It is urgent to act by accelerating the development of a decarbonized energy system, while ensuring that sufficient levels are maintained to meet world demand and organize a fair, organized, and balanced transition of the energy systems. Since 2020, the Company and its teams have been working tirelessly to build a new system based on the development of low-carbon energies, such as renewables, biofuels and biogas, clean hydrogen, synthetic fuels and CCS solutions to offset the emissions from residual fossil energies.
In our research centers in Pau and Lacq, our experts at the CSTJF and the PERL work on a daily basis to develop innovative, efficient, and economic technological solutions for responsible, sustainable production.
Records of how our transition strategy is progressing can be found in the Sustainability & Climate report. In 2023, TotalEnergies produced robust results in compliance with its objectives, while implementing its balanced transition strategy toward an integrated multi-energies Company by being the major most invested in the energy system of the future.
