TotalEnergies, a Numerical Pyrenees partner
- Everything in the company is a source of data. TotalEnergies is a big data company and has always endeavored to valorize this priceless corporate asset that sets it apart from the rest.
- Innovations are based on data, and various programs aim to raise awareness among personnel, of the challenges involved.
- The topic of responsible numerical technologies was illustrated by the presentation of innovative projects, and the participation of Emmanuelle Brechet, Data Technologies Vice President at TotalEnergies.
"We’re an innovative, pioneering, connected company that uses high-performance numerical solutions for its needs and to create services that ultimately concern us all. Taking part in the Numerical Pyrenees forum, showing off our know-how and backing the E-PY awards, gives us an opportunity to share the experience of an international company at local scale." explains Thierry Renard, Director of the Pau Site, which encompasses the CSTJF and the PERL.
Throughout the day, dedicated to responsible numerical technologies, which took place in Pau on June 27, 2023 based on an initiative of the local newspaper La République des Pyrénées, our personnel, passionate about their professions and the challenges raised by the energy transition of our multi-energy Company, presented two workshops:
- DEMETER (Earth observation) led by Anthony Credoz - watch the video here: E-Py 2023: E-py 2023: find out all about the TotalEnergies Demeter project with Anthony Credoz - La République des Pyrénées.fr
- Additive manufacturing (3D printing) led by Laurent Germain and Stéphane Martinez: E-py 2023: find out all about the TotalEnergies Fab Lab with Laurent Germain - La République des Pyrénées.fr
Our Data tech VP, Emmanuelle Brechet, took part in the round table discussion, during which she covered the different work ideas to ensure the responsible use of numerical technologies, both in terms of what solutions it brings us to improve our ways of working as shown by DEMETER, but also of the strategies to be implemented in the face of the environmental challenges that data represents, in terms of the volumes consumed and CO₂ emissions. In particular when we have a supercomputer like Pangea whose theoretical power is 31.7 petaflops and which now plays a role in all Company activities:
- Wind turbines: wind simulations to optimize the installation of wind farms.
- CO₂ capture and storage: simulation of reservoir storage capacities, evaluation of well integrity and study of the different thermal effects close to injector wells.
- Biofuels: molecular modeling that improves both CO₂ capture and new biofuels and lubricants.
- Exploration and development: image processing, seismic acquisition, reservoir simulation and the modeling of geological basins.
The evening continued with the prize award ceremony, with TotalEnergies sponsoring the category Numerical devices related to the territory. Emmanuelle Brechet awarded one of the prizes to Elisabeth Marimbordes, who created a podcast on the history of the Gurs concentration camp, entitled "From Gurs to Auschwitz". Find out more here.
Emmanuelle Brechet has a fervent interest in history and was very moved to be able to support this initiative: "Our history is our heritage. What really happened in Gurs, so close to where we live? We live in an epoch where, more than ever now, it’s important to remember human and historical tragedies. We have new tools, and thanks to digital technologies and using podcasts, we can listen to the accounts of people who witnessed such events, anywhere and at any time. It’s a real communication tool we can use to learn, grow our cultural knowledge, hone our critical mind, or simply stay informed. That’s what the first podcast on the Gurs Concentration Camp will encourage, by providing historical and literary reference points."
