Producing biomass to reuse CO2

Using CO2 to produce algal biomass that can be recovered as a biofuel or biogas is one of the avenues being developed to contribute to attaining the objective of a net zero carbon footprint in the second half of the century.

The PERL’s expert knowledge in water treatment, biological in particular, is called on to optimize the energy performance of these technologies designed to combat climate change.

The center has photobioreactors used for research on optimizing the culture and growth of microalgae that consume CO2, and an experimental infrastructure for cultivating microalgae in a carousel or raceway system (4 m3).

As part of this line of research, the PERL has also developed and patented respirometry tools adapted to monitoring microalgae activity.
